I was in a car accident a little over a year ago, I had a pre existing back problem that was retriggered, I have been through physical therapy, injections and a back brace. My orthopedic specialist informed me that surgery would be my best option. I am alittle apprehensive, but I am tired of being [...]

Really? I always …
Really? I always just heard you shouldn’t bounce while stretching, I’ve never heard holding a stretch for too long could be dangerous. After I work out or run, I usually hold my stretches for anywhere from 15-30 seconds, depending on stiffness/soreness.
Hmmm…shall have to keep it in mind. Thanks.

NEVER hold a single …
NEVER hold a single stretch for a whole minute. Worst advice imaginable. I wouldn’t recommend using any of the stretches he shows but ultimately it’s down to you there does seem to be a lot of positive feedback. BUT, if you are going to do it, stretch for around 8-10 seconds then relax, it can be repeated if neccessary but holding a stretch for 1 minute like he suggests is dangerous!

If you have low …
If you have low back pain, among a host of other ailments, there is a really good book called “Healing Back Pain” by Dr. John Sarno. It conveys, without a doubt, the most Responsible Content on the matter that I have ever come across and has nothing to do with anatomy. I highly recommend it. You can probably find it at your local library if you don’t want to purchase it. P.S. I’ve had 2 discectomies in the past – didn’t know better, and………..yeah, it’s a really worthwhile read.

LOL, you are …
LOL, you are correct. Flexion is NOT what you want to do with low back pain. You need to be evaluated by a McKenzie and/or Mulligan trained physical therapist. Flexion compresses front of disc, can increase bulge
December 24, 2009 - 8:52 am
This movement is ‘ …
This movement is ‘flexion.’ You typically want to avoid flexion w/low back pain, especially in morning as your discs imbibe fluids during night and r more susceptible to stress. When u flex, u compress anterior portion of disc and this can further increase a bulged disc. Sometimes your spinal canal can widen to accommodate bulge, however, while it ‘may’ feel good initially, u can in actuality worsen the problem. Get a McKenzie evaluation via a PT before doing anything like this if u have pain.
