I’ve had the L3.L4 L5 surgery about six years ago and went back to work a year later, but the pain came back so much. They decided to remove my hardware in another surgery but to no avail.I’ve tried drugs(vicodon, ultram and soma for spasms)rehab and still nothing. They say the only thing they can do for me is to install a dorsal spine stimulater(i think thats right). What it is is a box with leads runnig next to the spine and it’s supposed to block the pain to before it gets to the brain,I said no.

Depending on the details of your Lumbar surgery (XLIF, PLIF, ALIF) and the type of bone used (allograft, autograft), the answer to your problem may be resolved by a device called a bone growth stimulator. Failed Fusions in Lumbar surgery occur when the bone does not fuse. The bone stimulator jump starts this fusion process. Only 3 companies have FDA approval for this device, best one on the market is by a company called DonJoy.

April 18, 2010 - 9:02 pm
I had surgery on L4, L5, S1 and on C4, C5 laser spine surgery without any screws or foreign objects. My neck surgery passed however back lumbar surgery failed and now I suffer from nerve damage. I do not know what else to turn to. Been everywhere other than turning to dr. in India or China for Stem cells injections for replacing the cell tissues.

I have had 9 fusions…so have 18 screws and two rods. Its been three years I can walk further but still alot of pain. Some days it feels like the screws are going to come out. Wish I never had it done. But this was my last hope and still severe pain. Did all the esi’s shots and chiro, tried everything. So, guess I will be like this the rest of my life and I am only 44. Good luck to everyone. debs

I have had two disc laminectomys and now face lumbar infusion at L3-L4 and L4-L5 and rods with metal disc implants at S1. The doctors say 4 to 6 months flat in bed. Does anyone have any information to give me on the surgeries?

I tried chiropracty, massage, epidurals, exercise, etc. If you have low back pain, mid-back pain, or whatever it may be, there is a really great read called “Healing Back Pain” by Dr. John Sarno. It conveys the most Responsible Content on the matter that I have ever come across and is NOT “about” anatomy in general. You can google his name – don’t have to buy the book. P.S. I’ve had 2 discectomies in the past – didn’t know better, and…..yeah, it’s a really worthwhile read.

What kind of things couldn’t do when you were post op or at home. How long for the recovery? i appreciate your notes.
April 19, 2010 - 2:37 am
Thank you for the info. I was not expecting to hear surgery from the doctor and did not even think about the incision until I walked out the door. Did you also have L5 ans S1 fused? Thanks again.

I just got your message today. I am so sorry you have to go through this. The hospital for two days was HELL. So be prepared. I was not prepared for the pain. I am a surgery expert. After a head on collison 9 years ago I have had approximatley 27 surgery’s. Really I have lost count. This has to go down as one of the worst. Done Sept. 23, 08. Now I am working out at the YMCA. Still have pain.. Think I need a new bed. Write back. Best of luck to you. Lisa

i had lumbar problem for 4 years. doctors had no solution other than this surgery and they dont give u any warranty of success.my uncle had it last year but the 90% pain is still there.so i decided not to go for surgery.i tried 4 chiropractors and one of them cured me 100% within a week.i would suggest u not to go for any spine related surgery they just make money of it and ther is no success .

This is a 5 star explain-ion. I just had a 3 disc fusion. 2 weeks tomorow with a rod. 2,3,&4 are looking for a brighter future. I have to say I was not prepared for the post surgery in the hospital.
My thoughts and prayers are with anyone who has this ahead.

to FDS from Barcelona
I had a herniated disc problem last year when I was living in Barcelona and can recommend a neurosurgeon there. He does the keyhole surgery, my mother-in-law recommended him. He didn’t actually operate on me as he thought it was unnecessary. I do appreciate his profesionalism now, although I was pretty pissed off pack then. The pain was AUWFUL.
But I think now that I would go to see him again if needed.

I have degenerative disc disease.Over 4 years ago I had fusion done on the L5.I have the rods and screws in my back. They also did a bone graph from my hip to build a cage around the fusion and disc.I have been in mild pain until June of this year. The disc (L5) has slipped back out of the fusion. My original doctor moved away and left the surgeons he was working with.I have been denied any surgery from a neurosurgeon who will not touch me!What do I do now?
