Any way to alleviate pain from a pinched nerve and/or herniated disk?

I think I have a pinched nerve because I often get really severe pain going down one of my arms. I know I need to see a doctor, but until then is there any way to help the pain? Is there any posture/stretch/etc that I can try?

I had back surgery in my lumbar region to get rid of a few herniated disk in that region. I had a laminectomy with microdiscectomy. I just wanted to know how people were feeling after their back surgeries and the level of activity resumed.
